GOP presidential candidate Mike Huckabee addresses supporters at UNA
FLORENCE, Ala. (WHNT) – GOP presidential candidate Governor Mike Huckabee addressed supporters at a campaign rally at the University of North Alabama this morning.
It’s the first visit to Florence by an active candidate from any party in over 30 years.
Before his appearance, we caught up with those excited for Huckabee’s visit:
“The entire campus is buzzing right now for this,” stated Nathaniel White, Chairman of the UNA College Republicans. “So, just having Huckabee on campus is an incredible opportunity for everyone involved.”
Over the last two weeks, White has worked with city and campus leaders to organize the visit and rally. He expects more than 1,000 people to come to campus for the visit.
“We are really happy that we’re bringing everything together, so many moving parts and it’s finally coming together,” explained White.
But he doesn’t want to stop with Huckabee.
He said there has been communications with other GOP campaigns to bring them to campus.
“We want to bring attention to the university and to the Shoals area, and really put the Shoals on the map as a political center in Alabama,” White stated.
And being a regional college, he says a major selling point is candidates get access to voters in Mississippi and Tennessee.
If you’re planning to attend, shuttle buses will be transporting people to campus from the Florence-Lauderdale Coliseum prior to the event starting.
