2016 presidential candidate Jill Stein to attend weekend events in Holyoke

SPRINGFIELD ‒ Green Party candidate Jill Stein will bring her 2016 presidential campaign to Western Massachusetts this weekend, with a handful of Saturday stops scheduled in Holyoke.

Stein, who previously ran for president in 2012 and Massachusetts governor in 2010, will briefly speak at a breakfast fundraiser event with Holyoke City Council at large candidate Darlene Elias at Salsarengue Restaurant and Bar from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Saturday.

Following the breakfast, Stein is scheduled to tour Providence Ministries’ Kate’s Kitchen and help out during the food shelter’s lunchtime meal.

She will later attend the Nuestras RaicesHarvest Festival, where she will help the Pioneer Valley Green Rainbow Party with voter registration outreach and may deliver remarks, her campaign said.

Stein’s visit will focus on crime, education and economic development, as well as efforts to support small businesses and local economies – issues which she said should resonate with local residents.

“We’re at the breaking point and it’s very important that people struggling in these communities have a new way forward,” she said in an interview. “Holyoke is really the front line of this struggle.”

Stein should also touch on her support for Elias, a fellow Green Party candidate, her campaign said.

The presidential hopeful said she hopes to make additional stops in Western Massachusetts in the future, stressing that she wants to show voters that “there’s a different kind of politics – it’s not politics as usual.”
